26.1.–14.4.2024 in the Felleshus of the Nordic Embassies
Exhibition opening on 25.1.2024 at 18:00
Where there are Finns, there’s a sauna.
The sauna is an integral part of Finnish culture. Wherever Finns go, they find a sauna – or build their own. And this time, the sauna is being brought to the Felleshus, the common house of the Nordic Embassies in Berlin.
There are just over 5 million people and an estimated 3 million saunas in Finland. These include home saunas, traditional public saunas, summer cottage saunas, tent saunas, trailer saunas, floating saunas and everything in between. The ways in which to build a sauna – or use a sauna – are endless. As long as it’s hot!
What sets the Finnish sauna apart from many other sauna cultures is its informality: everyone is allowed to use the sauna in their own way. In the sauna, you can just be yourself, and titles and hierarchies don’t matter – everyone is equal in the sauna. The importance of the sauna tradition is also reflected in the fact that it is the first Finnish entry to be included on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
The exhibition “Die Sauna. Echt heiß. Echt finnisch.” gives an insight into Finnish sauna culture through photographs, videos and installations. And you can also experience using a real Finnish sauna yourself. The programme accompanying the exhibition includes talks, film screenings and, of course, visiting the sauna.
The exhibition is curated by Jaakko Blomberg and Karoliina Gröndahl. It is produced by the Embassy of Finland in Berlin in cooperation with Visit Finland and the Finnland-Institut.
