Media release 28th November 2016

Kirjakaari Oy will publish the illustrated book Sauna – the way of Finnish life in November. The book’s author and sauna expert is Carita Harju, Executive Manager of the association Sauna from Finland ry. Photographer and graphic designer Hanna Söderström is responsible for the photos and graphic design of the book. The illustrated book is available in English, Finnish and German. The book has 132 pages.

What is the book about?

The book Sauna – the way of Finnish life opens the door to the soul of the Finnish sauna by focusing on the Finnish sauna, sauna culture and sauna-related know-how. The thing that sets the Finnish sauna apart from other sauna cultures is that is a comprehensive experience, one that starts already before entering the sauna, continues throughout the sauna visit, and lasts for a long time after it. After visiting the sauna and cooling off, you feel blissful – as if you have been born again.

Sauna is a way of life for the Finns. The Finnish people have been going to the sauna for more than a thousand years, and the sauna is one of the oldest traditions in our modern society, one that has been passed down from one generation to the next. The beneficial health and well-being effects of the sauna are a growing trend, and Finnish saunas can be found all over the world. The book showcases both traditional and more modern sauna experiences, both in Finland and abroad. Take a look inside a Swiss tent sauna and see what the Finnish peacekeepers’ sauna and sauna diplomacy in Washington are like, for example.

For tourists, business travellers and those interested in sauna

saunakannet_engThe sauna is what Finland is known for among tourists, business travellers and those interested in the sauna. On the international level, the sauna is seen as a more Finnish product than anything else. The illustrated book presents the Finnish sauna in a modern way, without forgetting its history. After reading the book, even sauna tourists will know what “laeyly” means and that löyly is what really defines the Finnish sauna experience. The book also tells about the well-being and health effects of the sauna and gives tips on how to get even more out of the Finnish sauna experience by providing recipes for do-it-yourself treatments and tasty sauna tapas dishes.
